SG-1 are investigating a destroyed city. Only one bit seems to be intact, and it appears to be different in origin to the rest – a building with a large unknown device that could be an observatory, weapon or many other things. Daniel looks at some writing, Jack and Teal’c look around for any potential danger while Carter looks into the device. An invisible being seems to be stalking Carter, and swoops in on her, making her pass out.
They take her back to the infirmary. There’s no sign of any damage from touching equipment or an electrical shock, but Dr Fraiser suggests that fatigue may have something to do with it, and that Sam’s body may be damaged from all the stuff that’s happened to her. There’s a briefing held about the device and the planet, with Carter joining part way though. SG-16 is on the case and Sam keeps suggesting what they need to power it up. She requests to join them and Hammond denied – SG-1 (other than Daniel, who is helping translate the alien language) are off duty until the mission is complete, and Carter is ordered to spend some time at home. She doesn’t know what to do, so Jack suggests finding a hobby.

At home, Carter feels like something is watching her – and it turns out the entity from the planet is there. He watches her get into bed (very creepy behaviour) and sleep. The next morning, Carter meets a strange man saying hello outside of her house. The man says that this is where she lives, causing Carter to lock the door when she goes back in. She calls Daniel to find out if he knows anything yet, as she’s already struggling at doing nothing.
The man appears in her house, and tells her he’s been there since last night. He calls himself Orlin, and said he looked like he did before his ascension, and that he followed her though the stargate from the planet. He says he can be invisible in his non-corporeal state. When Carter asks what he does, he says that he’s in love with her (after only seeing her for a brief moment and perving on her).

A group from SGC comes up to do a sweep of the house after Carter reports the incident. Everyone is skeptical as nothing is found, and Hammond even suggests a psyche evaluation. Daniel’s research has come along, and he discovers that the device is a very powerful weapon. It was used to stop the Gou’ald, but they don’t know how the city was wiped out.
After the cameras are removed, Orlin turns up in Carter’s house again. He explains that his kind can share minds and he was attempting to do that when Carter passed out (a gross violation). He said he saw that Carter was as beautiful on the inside as the outside (eww). He points out that if she reports him again, he’ll just hide and she’ll look even crazier. She speaks to Jack, pointing out that she’s found a hidden camera after they were supposed to be removed, and says that if he shows up again, would it be best to get as much information before reporting? He seems to think that’s a good idea.

Carter works on a plan to activate the weapon. If a naquadah generator is overloaded, it can be fired. However, once you start the overload, it can’t be stopped. And they still don’t know if the weapons are responsible for everyone getting wiped out. She returns home to find that Orlin has set up a romantic dinner (which just seems to be a plain baguette). He keeps acting like they’re in a relationship, even with Carter saying no. He explains he’s retaken physical form. And can’t go back to how he was.
Jack and Teal’c knock on the door, so Carter gets Orlin to hide. They’ve brought pizzas and Star Wars, which Teal’c is a big fan of (and Carter is surprised that Jack hasn’t seen – he’s not a fan of sci-fi). They see a dinner table set up and think she’s got a date, with Jack trying to be funny but is obviously disappointed. They head off, with Teal’c saying he’s booked a venue where warriors battle in a ring of jello. He doesn’t realise that it’s about scantily clad women.

Carter tells Orlin about Oma Desala, another ascended being they’ve encountered. He explains that she was likely banished like he was, as helping or interfering with non-ascended beings is forbidden. He saw the people on the planet in trouble and told them how to build the weapon, saving them. But then they decided to use it to conquer other planets – so the other ascended beings destroyed them (undoing his interference) and banished him there.
In the next briefing, which has a high up guest in the form of Colonel Simmons (played by John de Lancie, aka Q from Star Trek). She wants to postpone testing the weapon until they’ve done more research, but Simmons is having none of it. Hammond gives her two weeks to find evidence, and Simmons is not happy – although Hammond (who clearly dislikes him) points out his connection to the president.

Back at her house, Orlin has made a giant emerald representing Carter’s birth month. It should be quite monumental in value. They go for a walk and discuss the weapon – Orlin says the ascended being will probably stop them. Carter asks about just defending the planet and Orlin points out that she doesn’t control what happens on Earth – and he won’t watch another civilisation be destroyed due to his mistake.
Back at Stargate Command, the weapon is going to be fired, ahead of the promised two weeks. Simmons says she doesn’t seem to have been working on anything as someone has been ordering stuff online and accepting deliveries – lots of technical equipment. He shows a picture of her and Orlin. Hammond apologises to Carter and says he was not informed of this happening. Jack points out that he approved of her to collect as much information as possible, in order to keep her out of trouble. However, there are already men surrounding the house.

As they want Orlin alive, Jack convinces Simmons to let Carter go in. He’s busy in the basement, and it seems he bought all that equipment to make a stargate. He apologises about her credit card bill (although the Emerald will pay for that and more) and says he’s going to stop them using the weapon. He does point out that this Stargate is pretty much a one-use version, but all made from Earth technology. Orlin activates the stargate and jumps in, with Carter following him.
Orlin attacks SG-16 and Carter asks them to stand down. They point out that the only way to stop the device is to unplug it, which will cause the reactor to explode. Orlin does this anyway and gets shot. As he’s dying, Orlin says that the ascended beings have given him another chance. He turns into energy, grabs the reactor and heads off into the sky, saving Sam and SG-16. A lightning bolt then destroys the device for good.

It’s an interesting episode dealing with the ascended beings, an important step for later on, but Orlin comes across as creepy for the entire episode, and not even just in a naïve way.
