Super Bubble Pop is a puzzle game that just feels…out of place. It’s a colour-matching puzzle game, but the backgrounds are like the equaliser on Windows Media Player, there are lots of odd skins for the puzzles and even a jukebox. The NGC magazine review shined some light on this for me: this was previously a download title for PC, with the defining feature being that you could plug in your own MP3s, with the backgrounds being tied to that. It’s a fancy, playable WinAmp.

As a puzzle game, it’s very lacking. You mainly line up vertical stacks of three, as doing horizontal ones are a pain to set up. Combos do light up as you aim, so you’ll occasionally get a horizontal line-up, but with different layers, it’s not easy to plan for. The music provided is alright, but it’s very clear that this was designed to be used with other music.

Poor
It’s fun and absorbing. Not quite as good as the cheaper PC version, and a bit too confusing to be a proper rival for Puzzle Bobble / Bust A Move, but a lot better than Zoocube, the puzzle-starved GameCube’s previous brain-teaser of choice.
