While I haven’t seen or heard of most of this long batch of licensed games during the GameCube’s slow death, my girlfriend has usually heard of them. Yet this one is a film she hasn’t heard of either. The style looks a lot like Antz and involves a kid that is shrink for terrorising and ant colony and needs to learn what it takes to be an ant in order to be returned to normal.

This results in an action game that feels like it’s falling apart constantly. It has a Zelda-like jump system (run off the edge and you automatically jump) but it barely works how it should, so you’ll have to redo a ton of jumps. The general movement is just awkwardly clunky and nothing feels right.

I was quite surprised when combat actually feels quite fluid. It’s still not good, just mindless button mashing, but it moves at a good pace. You’ll attack various different bugs (including really annoying little ticks). You’ll unlock some longer range weapons with special abilities, but these feel quite awful to use.

The missions are quite drab as well, and it’s all just a long winded lesson of hard work and working as a team. If the film is as blatant with its theme as the game, I can see why it failed. This is just clunky and generic and does nothing interesting.

Poor
The best thing you can say about The Ant Bully is that Bruce Campbell got paid for it. After that, it goes downhill faster than an ant on a waterslide.
