Zatch Bell is a anime about a competition that happens once every 1,000 years. 100 Demons descend upon Earth to compete in a battle to see who is best, however they need a human to command them via a spellbook in order to use their powers. These demons are mostly creatures that look like children, although there are a few more interesting looking ones. This is an enhanced version of the earlier PS2 Friendship Tag Battle.

As it’s pretty much what the series is about, this is a 1-v-1 fighting game. Your demon (or Mamodo, which is just the Japanese word for demon, but wasn’t translated in the English version to avoid mentioning demons) can perform a variety of attack and the human controller can also step in to wallop the opponent’s demon (which does look a bit sketchy). You start off with 8 characters with a few more to unlock.

Each pairing of human and demon has a short story mode (consisting of a bunch of battles) alongside the verses mode (which lets you pick your opponent, something many fighting games don’t do) and it seems like an alright fighting game.

Fine
For a $5.99-$7.99 price tag as of June 2016, I think that’s…a little too much for this game. I paid $3 and honestly, I would’ve rather had money for lunch than potentially lose my lunch attempting to tolerate this awful game for a second. Fans of Zatch Bell, I hate to even suggest this, but look elsewhere.
