When it comes to music based rhythm games, the available songs are a pretty major component. A good mix of music, as well as ones that properly suit the Bongos are rather vital. And with the US version of Donkey Konga 2, the tracklist just doesn’t land. Sure, there are a few great well-known tracks such as All Star and The Anthem, but there were only a small handful I was familiar with.

There are also quite a few slow paced songs which really don’t fit the bongons at all. On top of this, there’s not that much variety. Other Donkey Konga games are split into categories, but it’s almost entirely pop songs with a few bits of classical music. What’s even crazier is that there’s no video game music at all – Nintendo have a ton of their own music to choose from, most of it better suited to the bongos than a lot that’s here.

In terms of extras, there’s a mode where you play different parts of a song and an extra challenging mode where your prompts are different each time (although all with the same timing). There’s also a couple of minigames, one where you hit the drums in a specific order as quickly as possible and another where you have to memorise a string of notes. It’s still an enjoyable game, but the choice of music really lets it down.

Fun
Those new to the series are better off checking out the original, and returning drum maniacs should seriously consider the track listing in Donkey Konga 2 before making the investment.

Remake or remaster?
A new one with Nintendo music would be nice.
