In Japan, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes came with a bonus disc, similar to Baten Kaitos. This contained an emulated NES/Famicom version of the original Metal Gear. I would guess that Nintendo provided the emulator to both Namco and Konami, as the MSX version of Metal Gear was far more popular in Japan. The changes for the NES are quite disliked, especially by creator Hideo Kojima – even this disc has a big disclaimer that Kojima had nothing to do with this version of Metal Gear.

Even though I have no memories of using a NES, I have quite strong memories of Metal Gear. Well, the start of Metal Gear. You parachute down with no weapons, get lost and die. After many tries, you get into a van, and end up at a locked door and walking to the side will just repeat the screen.

And my experience was exactly the same this time, I couldn’t find the way to progress. With this just being a single emulated NES game, I didn’t see the point of following a guide to progress further, especially as this is a bad conversion of the MSX original, and even the Metal Gear final boss is removed. The existence of the disc is more interesting than how the game plays on GameCube. The only other thing on the disc is a short video of The Twin Snakes.

Poor
With its garbled script, lackluster ending sequence, and thoroughly bungled sneaking, it’s no wonder Metal Gear’s creator has disowned this tragic interpretation of his work. Strip away those elements, and all you’re left with is a neat yet unfulfilled premise bundled with some catchy music and the usual clunky menus and cryptic progression requirements of any given mid-’80s action-adventure title.

Remake or remaster?
It should still be included in collections alongside a translated version of the MSX original. Which, thankfully, is what Konami have done.
Official Ways to get the game
The NES Metal Gear is available in the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.1
