After stopping the Triple Play series and having a short rest, EA Sports came back to baseball with MVP Baseball. The first never came to GameCube, but this one did. There’s plenty of baseball games already on GameCube, but this one focuses on one side most don’t: the fielding aspect. The game is slower than others, but you have a greater amount of control over your outfield players, getting the ball to the correct base and all that. It works well.

The batting, I don’t like. There’s no target for either player and, even though the game feels more lenient with making contact with the ball, most slightly off hits will be caught instantly, which is worse than the alternative of getting one strike. I presume this was done for the larger focus on the fielding game.

Fine
For a long time it seemed like baseball games had become a bit stagnant, but over the past three years there have been some major strides. I’m a baseball fanatic and I’ll admit, I’m tough on baseball games. This is a gem, a true gem. The animations will uncurl your socks, the depth and ingenuity of the Dynasty Mode will create a new summer obsession, and even diehard Sega fans (like myself) will question their allegiance.
