This Ice Hockey game was the last sports game that Treyarch, which they were still developing for Sega despite being owned by Activision since 2001. They’d later make some more Spider-man games before falling into the abyss of Call of Duty.
NHL 2K3 is just an Ice Hockey game. It likely provided a decent simulation of the sport, but I didn’t find it as fun as EA’s NHL 2003.

One thing I did like is when defending, you can make your player slide on the floor, which can be a surprisingly effective way of tackling. On the flip side, goalkeepers seem to be unpredictable, with them saving most shots no matter how sneaky you try to be, but then random simple shots can score. And when when you score a goal, there’s no fanfare, just silence as your players quietly put their arms in the air.

Fine
But it’s the speed that’s the real killer in NHL 2K3. Don’t get us wrong: this game moves from end to end smoothly and efficiently, and – when things hot up – at an eventually decent pace. But there’s no sense of urgency, no sense that anything you’re doing really matters that much. It’s more gliding around the ice rink at Bracknell Leisure Centre on a Sunday afternoon, than full-on, points-mean-prizes league hockey.
