As rally is effectively a time trial, it’s quite difficult to get them right in a video game. The Colin McCrae series was well respected, but everything else just seemed an imitation of that. Pro Rally is no exception, where every race feels like your car is on ice. While Pro Rally looks decent, there’s something disturbingly static about the courses, more so than other racing games I’ve played. I think it’s because things like trees in the distance look pretty good (for cardboard trees) so you expect the world to have a bit more life to it as a result.

There’s an in-depth training mode that requires you to perfectly race around obstacles, various kinds of competitions, but nothing that makes Pro Rally engaging or unique. It does have an arcade mode that lets you compete directly with 5 other racers, but the game doesn’t know what you do when you come into contact with an opponent, so you both just hang still momentarily before moving on. There’s nothing terrible about this game, but there also isn’t much excitement to it, either.

Fine
The solid aspects of Pro Rally are outweighed by the problems, and it’s all a bit dull and unexciting at the end of the day. There’s little incentive to get a better time, and even the wealth of engine/tyre/widget-tweaking options can’t rouse sufficient interest. Best wait for Colin McRae 3.0, we reckon.

Note: At the time of the NGC review, Colin McRae was confirmed for GameCube, it was cancelled later on.
Remake or remaster?
Other rally games are better.

I remember the double page spread of Colin McRae Rally 3 in an issue of CUBE magazine and I was so disappointed that it never happened, just as I was when we never got a PAL versions of Pro Evolution Soccer 2 and Auto Modellista 🥲
V-Rally 3 was as good as rally games got on GC. I do remember having a really good time with it but then I was a fan of V-Rally 99 and V-Rally 2 too!
I did get Pro Rally eventually for the collection but I probably never really played it more than a couple of hours.
It was only ever just OK!
You named your game “Pro Rally”? Might as well have called it “Good Racing Game”. A+ naming guys :p
Don’t worry, there’s at least two other racing games with even more generic names on GameCube.
