RoboCop: New Crisis is a strange game in terms of platforms and regions. It initially came out in North America, where it was exclusive to Xbox. Europe got the most platforms with Xbox, PC and PS2 and the PS2 version got a Japanese release, which was the only region that got a GameCube version of the game. And it’s not like the developers, Titus (known for Superman, Hercules and Carmageddon 64) were scrambling for a publisher in each region – they published it themselves.

So why would Titus choose to release a game based on a beloved 80s American film only in Japan for the GameCube? Especially as the Japanese aren’t the biggest fans of first person shooters. My personal theory is that they stopped releasing games on new platforms in regions once the game’s dreadful reputation was known, so that by the time the GameCube port was done, it was pointless releasing it in North America and Europe as everyone knew it was really bad.

The game’s biggest failing is that it doesn’t work around how RoboCop moves. He’s a slow-moving tank that can’t jump – it takes ages to get around. So, naturally, Titus made massive, sprawling maze-like maps. Each level is like a little open world, but cut up into smaller sections with loading screens. You’ll have to move back and forth to figure out what to do – the first mission is just a vague “clear the streets”. I really did not have the patience to deal with it as the slowness is just agonising.

The game also throws an immense amount of enemies at you. RoboCop can take plenty of hits, but you can’t avoid anything and shooting is really slow, so you will end up taking damage and dying. There are no checkpoints in these long levels, you start at the very beginning. It’s agonising and not fun in the slightest. Everything about the game is just tedious – the only good thing I have to say is that the GameCube version doesn’t seem to be as broken as the Xbox version.

Poor
Every single aspect of Robocop feels like it was thrown together at the last minute, and the end result is a game that, for all intents and purposes, is just no fun at all. Even if you’re a fan of the Robocop franchise, you’d be infinitely better off just watching any of the movies (yes, even Robocop 3), rather than paying full retail price for a shoddy product like Robocop for the Xbox.

Remake or remaster?
A better RoboCop game would be better than doing anything like this – such as Rogue City
