Transworld Surf is a much more authentic surfboarding game rather than being a skateboarding game on the water like Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfing. While there are positive elements to this, people not quite familiar with surfing will be disappointed in the amount of tricks available, with far fewer stunts performed in the air.

However, one part that is much better than Kelly Slater are the locations, which take part in an actual coastal area you can navigate rather than a perpetual wave that forms around your character. If you fall off the wave, you have a choice of a new wave as you watch them in real-time. You can even paddle around freely and find people that will take you to hidden waves.

I also got a surprise when I decided to see if you could reach the beach. You can and you can paddle in the sand for a short while until you fall though the map and paddle underground. This wasn’t just a freak occurrence, the same can be recreated on every map. I’m not a fan of invisible walls in games, but surely this one warranted it? I’m not sure how it got missed as it was one of the first things I thought of doing. If you do go too far in any direction, a shark will eat you.

Unfortunately, this detour was the most fun I had in the game. Without the extra tricks, there’s not much to do and the other objectives are poorly explained. If you want an authentic surfing experience, this is probably the best option, but if you just want fun, then look elsewhere.

Fine
The good news for TransWorld Surf: The Next Wave is that it doesn’t have much competition other than the Kelly Slater game from Activision. The bad news is that a lot of little flaws and a couple of not-so-little flaws seemingly inherent to surfing games keep it from being the kind of game that non-surfers are going to be interested in. If you’re dying to hit some waves you might want to check this game out, but if you’re a fan of action-sports gameplay, Kelly Slater offers a tighter package.

Remake or remaster?
I’m not sure if surfing translates that well to a game.
