Generation of Chaos is quite a large Japanese franchise of anime-inspired games, mainly tactical RPGs of different types. It forms a larger franchise with the Spectral Force franchise (the universe itself is referred to as Neverland), and very few of the games have made it out of Japan, with a couple of later Generation of Chaos games being released in North America on PSP. Generation of Chaos: Exceed is an enhanced port of the PS2 game, although the enhancement is quite small.

GameCube owners get treated to some additional transition screens featuring clips from the Generation of Chaos anime (which serves as a prequel to the game). Interestingly, the anime itself has been ranked as the 20th worst anime (out of nearly 14,000) from user votes on MyAnimeList. These get repetitive quite fast.

The game itself seems to revolve around a turn-based board game-like map, reminding me of Star Trek Conquest on the Wii. You move your troops around, try to conquer nearby areas and build and improve your troops. It’s extremely in depth, so difficult to understand with just Google Lens. You can walk around some locations and talk to NPCs, which adds more depth to the world and prevents it from being just a board game.

In combat, each of your main characters commands a unit of soldiers, and you map out their routes on the battlefield. Everyone moves extremely fast, swarming around each other and causing a ton of chaos. Character abilities seem to trigger on their own, with very long animations. I got annihilated in my first battle and got a game over, although I imagine a lot is due to not understanding the game’s systems.

?
As for the RPG part, the complexity of the combat is a major negative factor. The requirement to memorize a large number of technique commands and the requirement for precise input is not suitable for the RPG genre. Wouldn’t it have been better to have command input combat rather than a random real-time format? Since it is an IF game, you can’t expect high quality, but it is somewhat interesting and is by no means a game that can be called a shitty game.

Remake or remaster?
These seem like some interesting takes on tactical games, however the games don’t seem well regarded in Japan.
